So energy is your gasoline, and stamina is the size of your tank. If you eat lots of fruits and vegetables, nuts and grains, (see MENU), you are putting high-test gas into your tank, and if you exercise regularly, you will be able to go a long way before you run out of gas. The Iron man competition is probably the most grueling thing that one can put a human body through. Only one man has won it more than twice, and he has done it 6 times. He was a total vegetarian, so don't let anyone tell you that beef is needed for strong muscles. The body has 4 primary priorities:
It allocates your energy according to those priorities, and if you run short of energy, the ones on the bottom of the list get short changed. Thus if you are getting ready for a big physical challenge, a heavy meal is the last thing you would want, since the body would regard digestion as a bigger priority than the race you want to run. It's why you get sleepy after a big meal, most of your energy is being directed to digestion. 50% of all the energy you produce from digestion is all you can access. The body keeps the other 50% to run your stomach!; and that is only if you eat fruits & vegetables, grains & nuts. If you eat mostly cooked or processed foods (including vitamins) your body charges you up to 30% more of your total energy leaving you with a measly 20% to operate on. No wonder you get tired! If your diet was better you could more than double your present energy. If that interests you, check out menu. Many athletes have problems getting proper nutrition because they are on the road a lot, and must frequent fast food places.
